Narciso Rodriguez

An Exercise in Minimalism

  • October 16, 2016 - January 08, 2017

Summary of Exhibition

Narciso Rodriguez: An Exercise in Minimalism, the inaugural couture exhibition at the Patricia & Phillip Frost Art Museum, reveals the designer’s rigorous adherence to his exquisite vision and the highly intellectual approach he employs to create pure, sleek and timeless garments. A favorite designer of Michelle Obama, Narciso has also dressed Sarah Jessica Parker and Claire Danes, among other celebrities. But Narciso remains grounded in his art. He draws inspiration from a broad range of sources; experiences, environments, spaces and interactions to guide his vision. His garments are intricate in cut, structure, construction and texture, yet clean and elegant in line.

The exhibition features 40 garments and purses, along with works of art that illustrate how minimalism in Narciso’s hand is a powerful and expressive force that challenges the viewer to reconsider the form and purpose of a garment. Alex Gonzalez, the Creative Director of ELLE Magazine co-curates the exhibition, in partnership with the Frost’s curator Klaudio Rodriguez.

In 1996, Rodriguez received international acclaim when he designed the bias-cut sheath wedding dress that his close friend from his days at Calvin Klein, Carolyn Bessette wore when she married John Kennedy, Jr. On November 4, 2008, Narciso Rodriguez became part of a monumental event in American history when Michelle Obama chose to wear a red and black dress from the designer’s Spring 2009 Collection for the President’s election night.

While Narciso Rodriguez is widely heralded as a global voice in fashion, it is fitting that the Frost Art Museum in Miami will afford the Cuban-American designer a debut exhibition documenting the origins and evolution of Narciso Rodriguez couture.
